What to Expect in Your First Kitesurfing Lesson

Your first kite lesson is all about comfort, confidence, and having fun. At WA Surf, we create a safe, supportive learning experience that's perfect for first-timers or anyone returning to kiting after a break.

Here's how your first lessons usually go:

1. Welcome & Briefing

Your first kitesurfing lesson is all about confidence and control. Meet your instructor, get fitted for gear, and go through a simple safety intro.

2. Kite Setup & Wind Awareness

Learn how to set up your kite and understand the wind window.

3. Flying on Land

Fly a small trainer kite in a safe, open space to build control.

4. Body Dragging in the Water

Learn to move through the water using kite power — a fun, important step before using a board.

5. Board Start Attempts

Try your first rides with supportive coaching. Most students start getting short rides by the end!

What Else Should I Know Before Booking My Lesson?

Not at all — kitesurfing looks powerful, but it’s actually more about technique and control than strength. The kite’s pull is absorbed through your harness and body weight, not your arms, so you don’t need to be muscular or athletic to enjoy it.

You also don’t need any prior water-sports experience. We teach you everything from the ground up — from setting up the kite and understanding the wind to safely getting on the board.

Students of all ages learn with us — from kids around 10 years old to riders in their 70s — and everyone progresses at their own pace. If you can swim and feel comfortable in the water, you already have everything you need to start your kitesurfing journey.

Average riders go upwind in 6–12 hours of structured lessons, depending on fitness, frequency, and conditions.

Typically 10+ with parent/guardian consent. We choose lighter winds and smaller kites for juniors.

We accept all major credit cards, PayPal, and other secure payment methods.

Yes — we recommend booking at least 2–3 days ahead, especially during windy weekends or holiday periods. This helps us plan around the forecast and secure your instructor.

No problem. We monitor conditions daily and will reschedule or postpone if the wind isn’t suitable for safe, productive training — no lessons are lost due to weather.

You can reschedule up to 24 hours before your lesson. We’re flexible with weather-related changes to make sure you get the most from your session.
