Style: Freeride / Big Air
Joel Grantham might be young but don’t underestimate what he can do out on the water. Having seen kitesurfers in action and always watched in awe as they flew high in the air, when Joel’s dad suggested he book into a lesson it was a no brainer. Joel was thrilled to give kiting a go and was a natural, picking it up in no time.
Since starting the sport, Joel gets out on the water every chance he gets. His favourite conditions are when there is enough wind for an eight meter so he can work on kiteloops and technical tricks in one session. While he prefers the sun and the warmth, he admits there is certainly a thrill in going out on a day with gusts of 40+ knots. If you’re down at The Pond on a windy day, you’ll probably see Joel out there working on his kiteloops or rotations, he’s addicted to that feeling it gives you as you are whipped through the air and then sent into a momentary freefall.
Joel’s preferred brand of kite is Reedin due to its versatility - it foils, surfs, does freestyle and big air all in one kite. It is one of the highest boosting kites in the game and yet it still catches you from a kiteloop in a heartbeat. A big fan of Reedin kites’ performance as well as appearance, Joel progression has been boosted immensely since he started using these kites. Keep an eye out for our young Reedin Team Rider, if you’re down at the Pond this season while a competition is on, he’ll most likely be out there killing it!
